East York was Canada's only
Borough until 1998 when it was amalgamated into the City of Toronto.
East York chose to remain a Borough rather than incorporate as a city
which shows friendliness that has been an important part of East York
ever since its formation in 1924.
For many years East York
had a high percentage of senior citizens. Now the demographics are changing
as many young families are moving into this neighbourhood, increasing
the diversity here. Home buyers find East York attractive because the
houses are relatively affordable and this great location offers quick
and easy access to downtown Toronto.
Most of East York's homes
were built from the 1890's and to the early 1960's. Since the houses
were built over such a wide period of time, there are many different
housing styles from street to street.
East York is has two storey
or one-and-a half-storey detached and semi-detached houses, as well
as bungalows, and some newer custom designed homes.
